All About the Boxing Legends
Here’s all you need to know about the boxing legends set to clash on September 16;
Valentina Shevchenko
Valentina Shevchenko is a Kyrgyz and Peruvian MMA artist and Muay Thai fighter who was born on March 7, 1988. She is one of the most prominent competitors in the women’s Flyweight division for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). She is also the former UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion.
Shevchenko’s career in UFC began as a replacement for Germaine de Randamie. This is where she fought against Sarah Kaufman and won via split decision. This was followed by a fight with Amanda Nunes (UFC 196-March 5, 2016), declared a loss.
Shevchenko’s third UFC fight was set against UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm on July 23, 2016, where she slowly picked up pace and gained a beautiful victory.
Soon, the fighter climbed the ranks in a fight with Julianna Peña in 2017, Priscila Cachoeira in 2018 (Performance of the Night bonus), Jessica Eye in 2019 (Performance of the Night award), Katlyn Chookagian in 2020, Jéssica Andrade and Lauren Murphy in 2021, Taila Santos in 2022 (Fan Bonus of the Night award), and Alexa Grasso on March 4, 2023. The fight with Alexa Grasso was her first career loss at Flyweight.
Today, Valentina Shevchenko finds herself at rank #1 in the women’s Flyweight rankings and #2 in the UFC women’s pound-for-pound rankings. Alexa Grasso
Born on August 9, 1993, Alexa Grasso is a mixed martial artist who has been competing in the women’s Flyweight championship (UFC) for quite some time. She is also the current UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion.
Apart from her career as a fighter, she also works as an analyst for the UFC. Her face-off with Heather Jo Clark on November 5, 2016, marked the start of her career in the UFC.
In 2017, Grasso faced Felice Herrig and was defeated. She went on to fight with Randa Markos at Pettis vs. Moreno, where she won via split decision. This was a bittersweet victory as she lost 20% of her purse, being three pounds over the strawweight limit.
In 2018, Grasso lost a fight against Tatiana Suarez in the first round. This was followed up by another event that served as a blow to her career. This was when Grasso was pulled out of a bout against Angela Hill on August 25, 2019.
Her victory in the fight against Karoline Kowalkiewicz in 2019 and Carla Esparza later the same year, along with the Fight of the Night award, allowed her to regain popularity. Since then, she has moved up to Flyweight and won against Maycee Barber in 2021 and Joanne Wood in 2022.
Her most prominent victory was against Shevchenko on March 4, 2023. She is scheduled to defend her title in a September 16, 2023 rematch.
The Alexa Grass vs. Valentina Shevchenko Fight Night
Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko are scheduled to fight for the Flyweight title yet against in September 2023. While Shevchenko will fight to regain her title, Grasso will fight to defend hers.
This Flyweight title is up for grabs at the UFC Fight Night on September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It is a fight to behold as one of the most prominent boxing legends face-off to fight for the Flyweight title.
One of the factors that contribute to the popularity of the event is Grasso and Shevchenko’s rankings. They are at #2 and #3 respectively, in the MMA Fighting Pound for Pound rankings.
This match is coming at a time when Shevchenko faces great pressure to regain her title. Grasso’s defeat of the former title holder is one that was unexpected by both players and the audience. This win was achieved through a spinning kick that took down Shevchenko. A rear-naked choke sealed the deal.
Final Thoughts
As the summer passes us by, we witness Grasso attempting to defend the women’s Flyweight Champion title for the first time ever. We also expect to see Shevchenko attempting to regain her title following her previous record.
Since her move to the Flyweight division, Grasso has been on a winning streak. She has won five fights in a row. However, she has a strong opponent to face, with Shevchenko only having three previous losses in her UFC career.
This event can be viewed at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 16, right after the UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia.
