The San Francisco 49ers looked like an unbeatable, well-oiled machine after crushing Dallas in Week 5. But the 49ers followed that up with their worst performance of the season against the Cleveland Browns. Now, San Francisco will be forced to face adversity for the first time this season.

Philadelphia will be joining the 49ers in deep though. Recent sports updates show that the Eagles blew a late lead to the New York Jets after committing a turnover at the worst possible time. The Jets took advantage and were able to squeak by Philadelphia. With the Eagles and 49ers losing, no undefeated teams are left in the NFL.

The teams losing opened the door for other teams, like the Detroit Lions, who have been playing consistently well all season. The Lions rolled past Tampa Bay last Sunday to improve to 5-1 on the season. Here’s the most important action from Week 6 of the NFL season.

 

Browns’ Defense Picks Up Offense

No one would blame Cleveland for being discouraged. The Browns lost their star running back for the season in Week 2. Cleveland’s high-priced quarterback has also been out for several weeks. Despite the Browns’ woes, Cleveland upset the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers on Sunday with former XFL star P.J. Walker under center.

But it wasn’t Walker, who passed for 192 yards and threw two interceptions, who turned things around for Cleveland. The Browns’ defense tortured San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy into a career-worst performance. Cleveland sacked him three times, limited him to 125 passing yards, and intercepted a pass.

The 49ers missed a field goal late that would have won the game. However, Cleveland escaped with what could have been a season-altering victory.

 

Philadelphia Finally Gets Caught

The defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles had several close calls this season. Quarterback Jalen Hurts’ three interceptions doomed the Eagles to their first-ever loss to the New York Jets. Four of the Eagles’ six games this season have been settled by six points or fewer.

What stung the Eagles against the Jets was how their offense performed during the fourth quarter of a 20-14 loss. Philadelphia’s offensive drives in the fourth quarter ended with two interceptions, a missed field goal, and a turnover on downs.

Tony Adams intercepted Hurts on the Eagles’ second-to-last drive, setting up New York running back Breece Hall’s 8-yard game-winning touchdown run.

 

Everyone Puts Pressure on Steelers

 

The Pittsburgh Steelers had an opportunity to kick up their feet during the bye week and watch all their division rivals play. To varying degrees, each team in the AFC North picked up victories that will help energize their pursuit of the playoffs. Cleveland’s win was the biggest surprise of the weekend.

The Baltimore Ravens also crossed the pond and picked up a crucial win over the Tennessee Titans. But no performance may be more critical from last week than the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow taking down the Seattle Seahawks. 

The Bengals, who opened the season 0-2, beat Seattle to even its record at 3-3. What was important for Cincinnati was developing the confidence of Burrow, who is still working his way back from an injury. Burrow threw for 185 yards and two touchdown passes to help the Bengals beat Seattle.

 

Bills Need to be Bailed Out at the end of Each Half

 

Buffalo was a double-digit favorite at home to beat the New York Giants. But nothing went to plan for the Bills. Buffalo survived a 14-9 victory but had to sweat out several challenging situations. The Giants had the ball on the Bills’ 1-yard line before halftime with 14 seconds left in the first half.

New York quarterback Tyrod Taylor audible to a running play. When Giants running back Saquon Barkley was stuffed at the goal line, New York didn’t have enough time to kick a field goal, and its lead was stuck at 6-0 at halftime.

At the end of the game, the Giants were trailing by five and had the ball at the Bills’ 1-yard line again. Buffalo had been called for pass interference as time expired, giving New York one untimed down to try and win the game. Taylor’s pass to tight end Darren Waller was batted away.

 

Cowboys Get Back on Track

 

Top sports news today shows Dallas doesn’t get down after losing one game. Usually, the Cowboys have found a way to make improvements following disappointments during the past few seasons. Dallas was able to rally in the fourth quarter and kick a late field goal to squeak by the Chargers, 20-17, at SoFi Stadium. Since the start of 2021, the Cowboys are 10-1 in the week following a loss.

This was a game Chargers’ offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was especially eager to get revenge in. Moore was let go by the Cowboys after last season due to Dallas’ offense struggles in the postseason.

Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy took over the play-calling duties. How much the Cowboys’ offense has improved this year is yet to be determined. Early returns have shown that Dallas hasn’t had an easy time scoring in the red zone.

 

Ridder Struggles With Learning Curve

 

The Atlanta Falcons hoped second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder could help them win a wide-open race for the NFC South Division title. Ridder has had difficulty keeping up with the speed of the NFL. Playing against Washington last Sunday, the Commanders’ defense tortured the young quarterback.

Washington intercepted Ridder three times and grabbed an eight-point victory. The Commanders were able to rally behind their second-year quarterback. Sam Howell didn’t put up big numbers against Atlanta but avoided making too many game-changing mistakes.

While Howell was sacked five times, he also completed 14 of 23 passes for 151 yards with three touchdowns.
