Next steps for U.S. Men’s National Team in World Cup Cycle after Gold Cup loss

Upcoming sports events.

The United States Men’s Soccer Team has surprised the world time and again with their victories and strategy. However, their elimination from the Gold Cup this month led to an uproar. As the fans rushed to pass judgment on team selection, the team and coaches sought to regain footing. This elimination has also impacted many upcoming sports events.

This elimination may have resulted from a poor understanding of player strengths as the teams were shuffled time and again following the FIFA World Cup. This loss did not just impact the team’s reputation but has also set a bad precedent for the tournament’s return to home soil just three years from now.

Here are some of the highlights that led up to the event and the next steps for the U.S. Men’s National Team, along with some soccer transfer rumors!

The United States Men’s National Soccer Team, also known as the USMNT, plays international soccer for the United States. They are the official representatives of the United States in international soccer competitions.

The USMNT is a member of both FIFA and CONCACAF, operating under the United States Soccer Federation. Over the years, this team has been present in eleven FIFA World Cups, making its first appearance in 1930, where it received the third position.

In 1950, the USMNT defeated England 1-0. However, that was followed by a long period of wait as the team failed to qualify until 1990. In 1994, the U.S. hosted the Cup but lost to Brazil. Yet this seemed to trigger their qualification in the next five World Cups and boosted their popularity.

In 2019, the USMNT was guided by Berhalter into the 2019 Gold Cup Final. However, this is where they suffered a defeat against Mexico (1-0). It was a significant defeat, as had it not been for the loss, they would have become consecutive champions.

New talent began to pool in during the pandemic, and by the 2022 World Cup, the USMNT maintained a great reputation, earning third place in the final qualifying round. With their interim head coach Callaghan, they also managed to defend their Nations League trophy in the CONCACAF Nations League.

However, 2023 was not a good year for them as they lost in penalty shootouts against Panama in the 2023 Gold Cup under Berhalter.

Upcoming Sports Events: What’s on the Horizon for the USMNT?

Here are some of the upcoming sports events you can expect for the USMNT;

1.USMNT vs. Uzbekistan – September 9, 2023 – CITY PARK, St. Louis, Missouri

The USMNT is up against Uzbekistan on September 9 in Missouri and is expected to play the game at 5:30 p.m. E.T. This game is expected to be one of four friendly tournaments they are going to play this year.

It is important to keep up with soccer transfer rumors, as all players will be available for the selection of these games. This game is one of the only competitions the USMNT can expect from Asia in the next three years before the 2026 World Cup arrives.

According to coach Berhalter, “Uzbekistan and Oman are first-time opponents for us, and both are preparing for the AFC Asian Cup, so we expect them to be good tests. We look forward to visiting two excellent soccer facilities and performing in front of the fantastic supporters in St. Louis and the Twin Cities.”

2.USMNT vs. Oman – September 12, 2023 – Allianz Field, Saint Paul, Minnesota

The USMNT is going to return to the Allianz Field for a friendly international match against Oman. For Berhalter, Minnesota has been a good luck charm as they have played multiple big games and received great victories along with much appreciation from the audience.

3.USMNT vs. Germany – October 14, 2023 – Rentschler Field, East Hartford, CT

This game is one you can’t miss as the four-time World Cup champion Germany visits the USMNT and plays with them on their home ground. This game is one small step taken toward the matches that are supposed to happen in the CONCACAF Nations League in November.

4.USMNT vs. Ghana – October 17, 2023 – GEODIS Park, Nashville, TN

This is the first time Ghana is going to visit the USMNT at the GEODIS Park. This game is going to be a high-profile friendly match that also serves to prepare the USA team for their quarterfinal matches in the CONCACAF Nations League.

One other reason behind the prominence of this match is Ghana’s performance in the past. Ghana has managed to push the United States out of the World Cup two times up till now, once in 2006 and then in 2010. They hope to follow this up with a victory on U.S. soil.
