One week after the Miami Massacre, the Dolphins were on the end of a beatdown in Buffalo. The Bills, who set off panic alarms after losing in Week 1 to the Aaron Rodgers-less New York Jets, have rebounded with three straight victories. There has been nothing cheap about those wins either.
Buffalo beat Las Vegas by 28 points in Week 2 and Washington by 34 in Week 3 before blasting Miami by 28 points last Sunday. Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen had his best game of the season for the Bills. He threw for 320 yards and tossed four touchdown passes. Everyone had a good time for the Bills.
Recent sports updates show Bills receiver Stefon Diggs grabbed two cups of beer from the stands while celebrating the second of his three touchdown catches. Buffalo hopes to keep the party going as the season rolls on. The Bills know that no matter how many points they score in the regular season, their year will be judged on how they do in the postseason.
There were plenty of surprises in Week 4, and teams in the NFL are scrambling to adjust.
Steelers Get Hit Hard
Kenny Pickett not playing well was tough enough for Pittsburgh to handle. Seeing the Steelers’ quarterback get hurt in the second half of an embarrassing 30-6 loss to Houston made things even worse. While the top sports news today shows that Pittsburgh may not see Pickett miss much, if any time, what happened to the Steelers’ offense is concerning.
While Houston has looked promising under rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, few expected the Texans to handle the Steelers. Pittsburgh entered the game on a two-game winning streak and was favored to win by a field goal. The Steelers weren’t competitive on offense.
Pittsburgh only picked up 12 first downs and was outgained 451-225. The Steelers will likely see the pressure pick up on offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Pickett looks like he has regressed and may struggle even more if limited by an injury. He only passed for 114 yards against the Texans and was intercepted once. Pickett hasn’t thrown for more than 235 yards in a game this season.
Giants Woes’ at Home Continue
Year 2 under New York Giants coach Brian Daboll has been a major disappointment thus far. What has Daboll and the fanbase frustrated is the offense’s inability to move the ball. Following a 24-3 loss to Seattle Monday night, the Giants have now only scored six points in their two home games this season.
After giving big money to Daniel Jones in the offseason, the quarterback has struggled to find space to complete passes. Seattle tortured Jones by intercepting him twice and recording 10 sacks. Jones’ most backbreaker pass was one in the red zone that was intercepted by Seattle defensive back Devon Witherspoon. He returned it 97 yards for a score.
Denver Shows Life
The Broncos were still licking their wounds from a 50-point loss to Miami. Then Denver fell behind 28-7 in the third quarter behind the woeful Bears. Another blowout loss, this time to a team not headed anywhere, may have been too much for the Broncos to take.
Denver was able to rally with a strong fourth quarter. The Broncos outscored Chicago 17-0 to win the game, including a go-ahead, 51-yard field goal by Will Lutz with 1:46 remaining in the game. Chicago’s dysfunction has only continued.
The Bears have lost 14 straight games. In addition, Chicago asked wide receiver Chase Claypool not to come to work after he criticized the team earlier in the week.
Wilson Gives the Jets Hope
Current sports news will likely show New York Jets’ fans are as pessimistic as ever about their chances to snap their playoff drought. However, if quarterback Zach Wilson can play like he did last week, they may have a chance. Wilson threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns during a 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Jets fell behind 17-0 in the first quarter before rallying to tie the game in the third. Kansas City is once again a Super Bowl contender. So, a strong showing for Wilson has to inspire the Jets’ defense. If the team can come together, New York should be a contender.
Detroit Puts Foot Down
The Lions have claws this season. Detroit went into Lambeau Field, long a house of horrors for the Lions, and ran all over Green Bay. The Lions built a 27-3 lead by halftime before holding on to a 34-20 win. Former Chicago Bear David Montgomery has flourished in the Lions’ offensive system.
Montgomery was asked to carry the ball 32 times against the Packers, and he ended up recording 121 yards with three touchdowns. He has been asked to carry a heavy load for Detroit. The Lions have handed the ball off to Montgomery 15 or more times in every game this season.
Vikings Finally Overcome Their Issues
Minnesota had a sour feeling of disaster. Carolina defensive back Sam Franklin Jr. set a team record by returning an interception 99 yards for a touchdown during the first quarter. The Panthers then added a field goal to stretch the lead to 10-0. For a Vikings’ team that had been haunted by turnovers all season, this looked like another game where Minnesota would lose based on its own errors.
But this contest ended up being different. Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins would turn himself around. Cousins threw two touchdown passes to Justin Jefferson, and Minnesota added a 51-yard fumble return for a touchdown by C.J. Wonnum. The Vikings’ defense shut down Carolina rookie quarterback Bryce Young and were able to hold on for a 21-13 win.
